In 1849, the first coke-fired blast furnace went into operation in Essen. In the mid-nineteenth century, industry pioneers such as Franz Haniel, Mathias Stinnes, Friedrich Krupp and Friedrich Harkort built up huge companies. Firms such as Kirdorf, Thyssen and Mannesmann also appeared. The economic intertwining of mining, iron and steel (with the large domestic car industry as customers) was a fact.
