Im Jahr 1849 ging der erste koksbefeuerte Hochofen in Essen in Betrieb. In der Mitte des neunzehnten Jahrhunderts bauten Industrie-Pioniere wie Franz Haniel, Mathias Stinnes, Friedrich Krupp und Friedrich Harkort riesige Unternehmen auf. Firmen wie Kirdorf, Thyssen und Mannesmann traten ebenfalls auf. Die wirtschaftliche Verflechtung von Bergbau, Eisen und Stahl (mit der großen heimischen Automobilindustrie als Kunden) war eine Tatsache.
