In 1849 ging in Essen de eerste met cokes gestookte hoogoven in bedrijf. Halverwege de negentiende eeuw bouwden industriepioniers als Franz Haniel, Mathias Stinnes, Friedrich Krupp en Friedrich Harkort enorme bedrijven op. Ook verschenen er firma's als Kirdorf, Thyssen en Mannesmann. De economische vervlechting van mijnbouw, ijzer en staal (met de grote binnenlandse auto-industrie als afnemer) was een feit.
