En 1849, le premier haut fourneau alimenté au coke est entré en fonctionnement à Essen. Au milieu du XIXe siècle, des pionniers de l'industrie tels que Franz Haniel, Mathias Stinnes, Friedrich Krupp et Friedrich Harkort ont créé d'énormes entreprises. Des sociétés comme Kirdorf, Thyssen et Mannesmann sont également apparues. L'entrelacement économique de l'exploitation minière, du fer et de l'acier (avec la grande industrie automobile nationale en tant que clients) était un fait.
