The municipality of Diera-Zehren is located in the northern part of the district on both banks of the Elbe. It lies about 6 kilometers northwest of Meissen and 16 kilometers southeast of Riesa. The B 6, which here follows the route of the old postal road between Dresden and Leipzig, runs through the municipality. The village of Zehren is located at the mouth of the Ketzerbach stream into the Elbe. The left Elbe districts belong to the Lommatzscher Pflege, while the right Elbe districts belong to the Großenhainer Pflege. Several districts of the municipality are counted among the Elbe wine villages. A cable ferry between Kleinzadel and Niedermuschütz connects the left and right Elbe districts but is currently out of service.
On January 1, 1999, the independent municipalities of Diera and Zehren merged to form the new municipality of Diera-Zehren with a total of 21 districts.
