Ottenstein is a municipality in the German state of Lower Saxony. The municipality is part of the Samtgemeinde Bodenwerder-Polle in the Landkreis Holzminden. Ottenstein has a population of 1,152 inhabitants.
Ottenstein originated in or before the year 1182 around a castle established by the nobleman Otto VII von Everstein. The village soon gained market rights and thus acquired the status of Marktflecken, situated between a village and a town. From a small village located one kilometer further north, Hattensen, which was burned down during the violent conflicts of the early 15th century, the surviving inhabitants moved to Ottenstein. The Romanesque-style church, built in the 12th or 13th century, from this former village, surrounded by a cemetery, remains as a mourning chapel at this burial site. This church is also depicted in the municipal coat of arms. Ottenstein suffered greatly from armed conflicts, outbreaks of infectious diseases, and famines due to poor harvests from the 15th to the 17th century.
