Groß Mahner is one of the 31 districts of the district-free city of Salzgitter in Lower Saxony, located in the village of Süd. Groß Mahner belonged to the district of Goslar until 31 March 1942 and became part of the city of Watenstedt-Salzgitter by an administrative act on 1 April 1942. On January 23, 1951, it was officially renamed Salzgitter.
The origin of Groß Mahner is dated to the 1st to 5th century, making the village one of the oldest settlements in the region around Salzgitter. The first written mention dates from 996/97. This was found in the records of the monastery of Corvey, the traditionses Corbeienses, in which the possessions of the monastery are recorded – including land also in Manderiwesteran, which was the former name of the place.
