Hochemmerich, with 17,943 inhabitants, is one of the old settlement centres of the city of Rheinhausen, which was formed in 1934 and became the Duisburg district of Rheinhausen on 1 January 1975.
In the course of time, the meaning of the name Hochemmerich changed. Hochemmerich existed as a parish since about 900, as a mayor's office.
