Thalheim is located in a broadened valley section on the banks of the Salzbach, a tributary of the Elbbach. The town itself stretches from an elevation of about 160 meters at the Salzbach to about 200 meters in the new development areas on the outskirts.
The Thalheim district roughly extends in a triangular shape tapering towards the northeast. The Salzbach flows through it from the northwest to the southeast. A further stream approaches from the north, which flows into the Salzbach at the northern edge of the town. The district borders, in a clockwise direction from the northwest, with Dorndorf, Frickhofen, the Elbtal district of Heuchelheim, the Hadamar districts of Ober- and Niederzeuzheim, as well as to the west with Molsberg, thereby bordering the state line to Rhineland-Palatinate. The highest point of the district is Hellersberg, located south of the town. The entire terrain rises around the town’s troglodyte location, especially to the south and west, with the exception of the steeply incised Salzbach outflow in the southeast. In the north and east, the landscape only rises slightly. The district mainly consists of agriculturally used land. Especially the high altitudes in the west are covered with mixed forest. To the northeast of the town, there is a nature reserve with several lakes, and to the southwest, a basalt quarry at Hellersberg.
