Three hundred thirty years after the founding of the city, the old town area was so densely built that in 1572 the first citizen of Kiel was granted the right to settle outside. Since to the north the village of Brunswik already existed, to the east the fjord, and to the west the Little Kiel, for a long time, only an expansion to the south over the Holsten Bridge was possible. An irregular development began along the existing field paths up to the Kuhberg. Kuhstede developed – later called Vorstadt. The inauguration document of the university in 1665 mentions the village of Kuhberg. This village can still be found today in the street name Kleiner Kuhberg. The Holsten Bridge was demolished, and in its place, the Holsten Fleet is being constructed.

The district Vorstadt is bordered to the north by Rathausstraße and the Holsten Bridge. To the north of the district border are the Little Kiel and the boat harbor. To the east, the Kiel Fjord forms the boundary. To the south, the district is bordered by Raiffeisenstraße, Sophienblatt, and Ringstraße, and to the west by Schülperbaum and Sandkuhle. The drill ground lies to the west of the district boundary, and the Sparkassen-Arena itself, formerly referred to as Ostseehalle, along with the neighboring Europaplatz to the southeast, is located in the district Vorstadt.
