Heisingen is located to the north in a bend of the Ruhr, which flows west into the Baldeneysee. The neighboring districts, separated by the Ruhr, are Überruhr and Byfang to the east, as well as Kupferdreh and Fischlaken to the south. To the west, Bredeney follows, then to the north Rellinghausen and Stadtwald, where the Heisinger Bach forms the boundary. Heisingen is situated next to the nature reserve Schellenberger Wald. From the elevated town center of Heisingen, the district descends on the peninsula to the south towards the Ruhr.
