Hofen is a district located on the Neckar in the state capital of Baden-Württemberg, Stuttgart, in the northern area of the Mühlhausen district.
Hofen was first mentioned in documents in 1120; it has been part of Württemberg since 1753 and was incorporated into Stuttgart in 1929. After that, Hofen was considered a district. On February 1, 1952, the district of Hofen, which until then belonged to the Bad Cannstatt district, was assigned to the Mühlhausen district. In the reorganization of Stuttgart into districts in 1956, the district of Hofen was merged with the neighboring district of Mühlhausen into the Mühlhausen district, which was joined by the district of Mönchfeld in 1964, the district of Freiberg in 1973, and the district of Neugereut in 1971. The latter had previously belonged to Hofen. However, the district of Steinhaldenfeld, which also previously belonged to Hofen and includes the Stuttgart main cemetery, is now part of the Bad Cannstatt district.
