The old town of Kassel in today's district of Mitte was among the most significant in Central Europe before the war destruction starting in 1943 and the demolitions of the post-war period. The center of the medieval town was the Altmarkt. Few buildings from the old city center have survived the bombing of Kassel. The reconstruction that took place in the 1950s and 1960s still shapes the area today. Some post-war ensembles are under monument protection, such as those on Treppenstraße.
