Garbenheim is the fictional town Wahlheim used in the book “The Sorrows of Young Werther” by Goethe. The bulk of the story is told through letters that Werther writes to his friend Wilhelm. In these letters, Werther gives an intimate view of his stay in the city Wahlheim (Garbenheim). It was here that Werther met Lotte and fell instantly in love with her.
Did you know that the novel “The Sorrows of Young Werther” caused a cascade of suicides in Germany, Italy and Denmark. The book was even banned in these countries for that reason. The story of the book takes place in Garbenheim (known as Wahlheim in the book). Sociologist David Philips named this suicide cotagion the Werther Effect.
