Tegernsee is a town in the Miesbach district of Bavaria, Germany, on the shore of Lake Tegernsee 747 m above sea level. A spa town, it is surrounded by an alpine landscape in Upper Bavaria, and has an economy mainly based on tourism.
It is unknown who the original settlers of the area around the lake were. The recorded history of the region and of the town began with the arrival of the Bavarians in the 6th century AD. The noble family of the Agilolfings ruled this region and the entire Duchy of Bavaria.
