The "nursery" of the young King Ludwig II.
The history of Hohenschwangau Castle reaches far back.
The Swanstone Castle was first mentioned in documents in the 12th century. At that time, the knights of Schwangau lived here. Over the centuries, the castle was heavily damaged.
In 1832, Crown Prince Maximilian, the later King Max II, acquired this castle. Over the following 5 years, Maximilian had the castle converted into what is now Hohenschwangau Castle.
King Max II and his family used the castle as a summer and hunting residence.
After his death, his son, King Ludwig II, took over the royal apartments and had them redecorated according to his vision.
He also spent a lot of time at Hohenschwangau Castle. The royal apartments, the castle garden, and the castle kitchen have been preserved to this day and can be visited.
