La historia del castillo de Hohenschwangau se remonta lejos.
El castillo de Schwanstein fue mencionado por primera vez en un documento en el siglo XII. En ese tiempo, vivían aquí los caballeros de Schwangau. A lo largo de los siglos, el castillo sufrió importantes daños.
En 1832, el príncipe heredero Maximiliano, el futuro rey Max II, adquirió este castillo. Durante los siguientes 5 años, Maximiliano hizo remodelar el castillo en el actual castillo de Hohenschwangau.
El rey Max II y su familia utilizaron el castillo como residencia de verano y caza.
Tras su muerte, su hijo, el rey Luis II, tomó posesión de los apartamentos reales y los redecoró según sus ideas.
Él también pasó mucho tiempo en el castillo de Hohenschwangau. Los apartamentos reales, el jardín del castillo y la cocina del castillo se han conservado hasta hoy y se pueden visitar.
