Joséphine de Beauharnais, the wife of Napoleon, came to Aachen in the summer of 1804 to take a cure in the famous thermal baths. Her visit caused a lot of commotion at the time.
She notably visited the “Elisenbrunnen”—the most famous hot spring of Aachen where the nobility and high-ranking guests came to enjoy the cure. The Elisenbrunnen had already been a fashionable spa in the 18th and 19th centuries, known for its healing springs and central role in the social life of Europe’s elite. Here, Joséphine also came regularly to bathe, hoping to cure her childlessness. She spent her days under the supervision of the famous bath doctor Dr. Reumont and also devoted hours to her clothing and wardrobe. In addition to the baths, she visited factories, social institutions, and of course the Aachen Cathedral.
