Josefina de Beauharnais, la esposa de Napoleón, llegó en el verano de 1804 a Aquisgrán para curarse en los famosos baños termales. Su visita causó mucho revuelo en aquel entonces.
Visitó en particular el “Elisenbrunnen”—la fuente de agua caliente más famosa de Aquisgrán donde la nobleza y los huéspedes de alto rango venían a disfrutar de tratamientos. El Elisenbrunnen ya en los siglos XVIII y XIX era un balneario de moda, conocido por sus aguas curativas y su papel central en la vida social de la élite europea. Aquí también venía Josefina, con la esperanza de curar su infertilidad, y se bañaba regularmente. Pasaba sus días bajo la supervisión del conocido médico balneario Dr. Reumont y además pasaba horas cuidando su vestimenta y guardarropa. Además de los baños, visitó fábricas, instituciones sociales y, por supuesto, la Catedral de Aquisgrán.
