Joséphine de Beauharnais, de vrouw van Napoleon, kwam in de zomer van 1804 naar Aken om te kuren in de beroemde thermale baden. Haar bezoek bracht destijds veel ophef.
Ze bezocht met name de “Elisenbrunnen”—de beroemdste warmwaterbron van Aken waar destijds de adel en hooggeplaatste gasten kuren kwamen genieten. De Elisenbrunnen was al in de 18e en 19e eeuw een mondain kuuroord, bekend om zijn geneeskrachtige bronnen en centrale rol in het sociale leven van Europa’s elite. Hier kwam ook Joséphine, in de hoop haar kinderloosheid te genezen, regelmatig baden. Ze bracht haar dagen door onder begeleiding van de bekende badarts Dr. Reumont en besteedde daarnaast uren aan haar kleding en garderobe. Ze bezocht behalve de baden ook fabrieken, sociale instellingen en uiteraard de Aachener Dom.
