Wolfegg Castle

Source: Martin Waldseemüller

Description

It was in Wolfegg Castle that one of the most remarkable maps of the world was found again on July 17, 1901 by Father Joseph Fischer, a professor of history and geography. He spent hours in the castle's library which has a vast amount of rare historical books. On the second floor of the castle's south tower, he discovered not only a rare 1515 star chart engraved by Albrecht Dürer, but also two giant unfamilar world maps: the Waldseemüller map. It is the map that first mentioned America with that name, created by Martin Waldseemüller in 1507.
