This toll house, a late medieval mansion, dates from 1589 and now houses the city museum. This museum has set up a room dedicated to Prince Claus of the Netherlands. Photos and documents remind us of the engagement. In October 1965, Prince Claus introduced his future wife, the former Crown Princess Beatrix, to the inhabitants of Hitzacker from the balcony of the Rathaus. After the death of Prince Claus, a bust was erected in June 2005 on the square in front of the new Rathaus in the Bürgerpark.
