Waldeck Castle is a castle, located on a wooded rocky hill just west of the Hessian town of Waldeck. The castle is located in the northern part of the Kellerwald-Edersee National Park on the northern shore of Lake Edersee. The castle can be reached from the town via a road.
In the year 1120, Waldeck Castle was mentioned for the first time in a document. The castle came into the hands of the House of Schwalenberg and from 1180 a branch of this family included the name Waldeck in its family name. In the centuries that followed, the castle was extended several times and until 1655 the castle was the residence of the Counts of Waldeck, who then moved to the Schloss Arolsen in Bad Arolsen. The building was then given multiple uses. First it was a fortress with the seat of a castle commander, then it became a barracks and from 1734 to 1868 it was a penitentiary and women's prison.
