In Old Ni-js number 53 it is stated that in 1895 the mayor of Bergh wrote a letter to his colleague in Emmerich. He says that he had hoped that no new permit would be issued after the death of owner Van Gellekom because 'that bar causes a lot of nuisance to the police of this municipality and a lot of domestic and physical suffering to the residents here'. In 1902, a resident of 's-Heerenberg even died after being mistreated by the owner of the inn.
