Isselburg is a town in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia, located on the Issel river in the Borken district. The town has a population of 11,196 residents[1]. Neighboring towns include Bocholt and the Dutch Doetinchem. Isselburg was mentioned around 1300 as "Yselberge." In the 14th century, there must have already been a castle here. This castle was enlarged around 1410 by the Count of Kleve and was then called "Neyenborg." Duke Adolf I of Kleve granted city rights in the territory of the current municipality in 1441. Together with the Duchy of Kleve, Isselburg belonged to Brandenburg in 1609. In the years 1624, 1669, and 1697, the town fell victim to major city fires. Remnants of the old city wall and the only preserved defense tower at the Catholic church testify to the scale of the castle that the Lords of Kleve established as the easternmost outpost of their sphere of influence.
