From the district of Bardenberg, one today reaches a shady avenue that leads to the still preserved outer bailey with a round tower - formerly a dungeon - and a Gothic archway. The outer bailey was originally protected by a moat. The inner area of the castle, protected by imposing rubble stone walls with defensive bastions, was designed as a refuge. In times of war and emergencies, the surrounding population could find shelter there from the manors and from the village of Bardenberg. Today, Castle Wilhelmstein houses, in addition to the open-air theater, a popular restaurant that is run by the landowner rather than by the theater operation.
