Desde el barrio de Bardenberg se accede hoy a un camino sombreado que lleva primero a la fortaleza exterior aún conservada con su torre redonda - antiguo calabozo - y su arco gótico. La fortaleza exterior estaba originalmente protegida por un foso. El interior del castillo, que está protegido por poderosas murallas de piedra de canto con una bastión defensivo, fue diseñado como un refugio. En tiempos de guerra y necesidad, la población de los alrededores podía encontrar refugio allí desde las casas señoriales y el pueblo de Bardenberg. Hoy en día, el castillo de Wilhelmstein alberga, además de un teatro al aire libre, un popular restaurante que - al igual que el servicio del teatro - está gestionado por el propietario del terreno y no por la operación del teatro.
