Ribbon Weaving Museum Elfringhausen

The Ribbon Weaving Museum Elfringhausen is a local history museum in Elfringhausen, Hattingen, which opened in 1996 and is dedicated to the local history of ribbon weaving. It is under the sponsorship of the Bürger-, Heimat- und Verkehrsverein Elfringhausen und Umgebung.

Before the coal and steel industries shaped the Ruhr area, the textile industry was widespread there and in the neighbouring Bergisches Land. In 1822, weavers were first mentioned in a document in and around Hattingen. They often worked with linen, cotton and silk in the publishing system at home, the looms were first driven by hand, then by steam and water power, and from 1911 onwards by electric motors. Until 1970, around half of Elfringhausen's households were active in ribbon weaving: in 1961, there were 29 weavers and 63 ribbon looms in Elfringhausen. They produced curtain, garter and silk ribbons for the textile industry. With automation, the house ribbon weavers had to stop their production.
