Juist is one of the eight German islands in the Wadden Sea, the surrounding islands are called Borkum, Memmert (uninhabited) and Norderney. The island is 17 kilometers long and up to 700 meters wide. It has continued to rise as a high point above sea level after the ice ages. The landscape is similar to that of 'our' Wadden Islands: a mudflat with salt marshes that is shielded from the North Sea by dunes.
