A Jewish burial ground probably existed as early as the end of the 16th century, and there is evidence that it has existed since 1620 at the latest. From 1796 to 1937 it was located in front of the Lüdinghauser Tor. A second cemetery was established in 1905 at the current location, where the cemetery of the Protestant community had already been located since 1898. The gravestones from the old cemetery were placed here in 1937. The cemetery was desecrated in 1938. The surrounding wall was destroyed on the north side during the air raids in 1945. In 1963 it was reduced by an unoccupied part, which was given to the Evangelical Parish. The originally symmetrical complex was accessed from the neo-baroque gate via the avenue. The gate itself comes from the Villa Schlieker on Nonnenwall, which was destroyed in the Second World War. The translocated gravestones are located in the western part, they are mostly simple stelae, among them three are made of metal. The elaborate mausoleum of the Bendix family, in which Meyer Bendix and his wife Sara née Spanjaard are buried, stands elevated at the end of the avenue. The mausoleum is a pseudoperipteros of Doric order, with embossed ashlars and slender columns. It stands on a flat podium.
