The Frankenschanze in the district of Großgartach in the city of Leingarten in the Heilbronn district is a ring wall with an exterior ditch. It is located at an altitude of 240 meters above sea level at the eastern end of the Heuchelberg on a flat ledge of the northern slope in the so-called Baunzelwald. Built no later than 1000 AD, the Frankenschanze was evidently a permanently inhabited, fortified residence of socially prominent circles. According to new findings, it may have originated as the castle of the district count of the Gartachgau.
