Hagenburg Castle is a small castle complex in Hagenburg/Lower Saxony, which served for a long time as the summer residence of the House of Schaumburg-Lippe. It is connected to the Steinhuder Meer by the 1.2-kilometre-long Hagenburg Canal on the edge of the Hagenburg Moor.
Hagenburg Castle, as a forerunner of Hagenburg Castle, was first mentioned in a document in 1369 as Hagenborch. It probably goes back to the Counts of Schaumburg when they gained a foothold on the Steinhuder Meer in the 14th century. The castle probably served in the early 14th century to secure the settlement of Hagenburg, which was built in the second half of the 13th century.
From the 14th century onwards, the castle was often mortgaged and later served as the administrative seat of the Amt of Hagenburg. In 1518, the brothers Anton and Johann zu Holstein-Schaumburg were enfeoffed with the castle by the Hessian landgrave. Until 1558, the Lords of Heimburg sat here as their ministeriales, after which Ludolf Klencke was. Klencke had a gatehouse built in 1558 and the castle rebuilt. In the residential wing, he installed a spiral staircase. His son Ernst Ludolf initiated some renovations and the construction of a sheepfold in 1574.
