Description

After the Reformation, it was converted into a convent, though the designation St. Johannis Monastery was retained. The complex, which is located directly on the northern shore of the Schlei, has remained to this day and is considered the best-preserved medieval monastery complex in Schleswig-Holstein.

The first establishment of the Benedictine order in Schleswig, which became the episcopal seat of the diocese of Schleswig founded under the influence of Otto I in 948, was the St. Michaelis Monastery. It was first documented in 1192, at the time of its dissolution by Bishop Waldemar of Schleswig, and described as a double monastery, though this is not considered historically confirmed. It is established that besides the monks, nuns also lived in the area of the monastery, which triggered a crisis of a religious and political nature. The moral decay of its inhabitants is often cited as a reason for the dissolution of the monastery. It is confirmed that the monks were sent to Guldholm by Lake Langsee near today’s municipality of Böklund, where Waldemar wanted to establish his own house monastery that was to be operated according to the rules of the Cistercian order.
