The Merkur Spielbank Hohensyburg, one of four casinos in North Rhine-Westphalia, was built between 1983 and 1985 according to plans by architect Harald Deilmann near Hohensyburg in Dortmund and is the third casino in NRW. The Merkur Spielbank Hohensyburg belongs to the Gauselmann Group. On September 1, 2021, the state of NRW sold all four casinos in the state to the company for a total price of 141.8 million EUR. Until the opening of the Merkur Casino Duisburg, the Dortmund casino was the highest-grossing in Germany.
