Description

The Graf Stauffenberg Barracks was a barracks of the Bundeswehr built in 1957 in Sigmaringen in the district of Sigmaringen. The barracks was named on July 20, 1961, after the officer and resistance fighter Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg.
The Graf Stauffenberg Barracks, which was originally established in the quarter of Ziegelholz in the Sigmaringen district of Laiz, became known primarily through the 10th Armored Division, a large unit of the army. Its subordinate troop units were stationed in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg and included up to around 12,100 soldiers. The headquarters was located here. In addition, the barracks housed various associations and units throughout its existence. The site was founded as early as 1906 – at that time with about 40 soldiers. Construction of the current barracks in Ziegelholz did not begin until 1957. Prior to this, the federal government acquired the barrack grounds from the municipalities of Sigmaringen, Sigmaringendorf, and Bingen. It has carried the name Graf Stauffenberg Barracks since 1961. Colonel Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg was the main actor in the failed assassination attempt on Adolf Hitler on July 20, 1944.
