The Arnstein Castle is a castle ruin on the edge of the Harz mountains and is located in the district of Mansfeld-Südharz in Saxony-Anhalt. The ruin stands on an elevation of 210 m above sea level between the villages of Sylda and Harkerode, south of Aschersleben and northwest of Hettstedt. The medieval fortification developed into the castle of the Lords of Arnstein in the 12th century, featuring their impressive, conspicuous tower-like palatial structure. Since the 19th century, it has been known as a romantic ruin on a regional level.
The medieval high castle was the ancestral seat of the Lords of Arnstein, who belonged to the Swabian family of the Lords of Steußlingen. Walther II named himself after the castle in 1156, which was the first documented mention. At this time, the first Romanesque castle must have been established. The two eastern round towers and the ring wall between them can be attributed to this construction phase. No further structures from the Romanesque period have been documented so far.
