The park landscape The Cleves Gardens in Cleves in Germany was laid out around 1660 by order of stadtholder Johan Maurits of Nassau-Siegen. After a period of decline, the landscape park was restored to its former glory at the end of the twentieth century.
Today's Museum Kurhaus Kleve is located in the middle of a historic park landscape. Art and nature, indoors and outdoors, enter into multifarious relationships in this place. The natural landscape situation with the Springenberg and the 'Tiergartenwald' inspired the Cleves stadtholder Johan Maurits of Nassau-Siegen to create a garden of the arts, with the so-called Amphitheatre as its centrepiece.
