Senden Castle is one of the numerous moated castles in Münsterland. It is located on the River Stever, which feeds the moat of the castle. In addition, the Dortmund-Ems Canal is about 250 meters away.
In the Middle Ages, the manor of Senden was owned by the von Senden family called Benekamp under the name Benekamp. The heiress of this family, Kunigunde, married Alexander Droste zu Kakesbeck . His father Albrecht was a brother of Heinrich Droste zu Vischering, progenitor of the later Barons and Counts Droste zu Vischering, who are still resident at Vischering Castle, the moated castle Darfeld and the Erbdrostenhof in Münster. Under the name of Droste zu Senden, a new branch of the family was formed.
