The Arnold-Janssen-Gymnasium is a Catholic private school founded in 1928/29 by the Steyl Missionaries in Neuenkirchen/St. Arnold near Rheine. With over 1100 pupils, it is one of the largest grammar schools in North Rhine-Westphalia and is of national importance.
In 1920, the Steyl missionaries were looking for a suitable location near Rheine for the establishment of a mission school. The innkeeper August Schmitz from Neuenkirchen had transferred his entire property to the Steylers, which gave the missionaries real estate here. In 1924, for example, it was possible to exchange inexpensive wasteland on the Münsterland gravel sand train between Neuenkirchen and Emsdetten near the Neuenkirchen Land railway station.
