It lies as part of the Krumbholz recreation area in the Lower Saale Valley Nature Park between the Saale and Bundesstraße 185. The zoo covers an area of 8.5 hectares and shows over 1130 individuals in around 135 species and breeds. The stop of the Bernburg Park Railway, named after the zoo, is located opposite the entrance on the other side of the B 185.
The beginnings of the Bernburg Zoo date back to 1909. At that time, a first aviary for pheasants was built on the courtyard wall of the forest keeper's house in Krumbholz, which had been donated by the city of Köthen. At that time, there was already a fifty-year brown bear keeping at Bernburg Castle. In addition, mute swans and other waterfowl were already kept in the immediate vicinity of the later zoo on the Röße.
