The Herrenkrug railway bridge in Magdeburg-Herrenkrug spans the Elbe at river kilometre 329.56. The structure is part of the Berlin–Magdeburg railway and was built between 1869 and 1872 during the realignment of the railway line as part of the new construction of Magdeburg Central Station. On May 15, 1873, the bridge was put into operation.
The 714 m long structure consisted of five main openings above the River Elbe and the Old Elbe, each with a span of 62.8 m, and in the west over the commercial port and in the east over the foreland of a total of ten side openings with a span of 31.4 m. The double-track superstructures were beam bridges with steel truss girders and underneath carriageway and were designed as Schwedler bridges. It was one of the most important bridges over the Elbe on the east-west railway connections. In the 1910s, up to 125 pairs of trains used the structure every day. On April 18, 1945, the bridge was severely destroyed by German troops with explosions. However, as early as 12 March 1946, the restored structure was opened to traffic after extensive construction work.
