The elongated, crescent-shaped lake is part of an old arm of the Elbe, which runs only a few hundred meters to the west. The length of the lake is about 700 meters, the maximum width about 50 meters. Since the Kuhlenhagen is located on the side facing the river of the Elbe dike to the east, it is flooded during Elbe flooding.
South of Kuhlenhagen is Lake Steinföhr, which belongs to the Randau-Calenberge district. To the north are the Mönchsseen and the Mönchssgraben, which drain into the Elbe.
