Miltenberg Hbf was the first railway station of the Bavarian town of Miltenberg from 1876. As it was a terminus, it posed an ongoing operational obstacle, and in passenger traffic, it was replaced in 1977 by the rail station Miltenberg Nord on the right bank of the Main, serving as a freight station until 2001.
On October 1, 1854, the Royal Bavarian State Railways opened the section Lohr–Aschaffenburg of the Ludwig-West Railway, which is the continuous connection from Bamberg to Frankfurt am Main. Its route over the Spessart ramp left the towns in the Main quadrangle behind. As a result, Miltenberg, Obernburg, and Stadtprozelten increasingly fell into a transportation and thus economic backwater. Nevertheless, the Bavarian state showed no interest for particularistic reasons in establishing a rail connection from Lohr to Aschaffenburg along the Main, as this would have enabled neighboring Baden to connect to its own rail network in Wertheim or Amorbach, thus creating competition for the Ludwig-West Railway.
