The Kinzigtalsperre, built between 1976 and 1979, dams the Hessian Kinzig river between Bad Soden-Salmünster and Steinau near the village of Ahl. It serves flood protection, low water increase, and electricity generation. The catchment area of the dam covers 231 square kilometers.
The dam has a height of 14 m and a crest length of 550 m. It is constructed as an earth dam with an asphalt concrete outer seal. The highest recorded water depth is 12 m, but in summer it is only an average of 7.50 m, and in winter an average of 5.50 m. The reservoir covers a maximum area of 125 hectares with a lake length of 3.6 km. The Kinzigtalsperre can hold up to 7.2 million cubic meters of water.
