House Opherdicke

House Opherdicke is a water castle and former knight's estate in the district of Opherdicke in Holzwickede. The house is situated east of the town center on the ridge of the Ardey Mountains, overlooking the Ruhr valley to the south. After being acquired by the Unna district, it underwent extensive renovation and restoration in 1980.
The estate is first mentioned in the year 1176. Heinrich von Herreke from the Dortmund noble family pledged his possession to the Archbishop of Cologne in that year, who granted it to the noble lords of Grafschaft after Heinrich's death. This family remained in possession of House Opherdicke until 1573 and awarded the estate to a ministerial family that took on the name Herreke. After the Gruwel and Lappe families became heirs of the Herreke through marriage in the 15th century, the estate passed around 1500 to the Kamen castle family of von Fresendorf, from whom it was acquired by purchase in 1719 by the von Hane family to Werve. In 1792, the Werler salt mine owner Franz Caspar von Lilien inherited the estate, which in 1906 his namesake grandson bequeathed to his niece Eugenie Countess Berghe von Trips, born von Fürstenberg. After parts of the estate had already been sold in 1912, the remaining estate along with the house was sold to Theodor Regenbogen in 1918.
