The chalk pit Saturn in the area of the municipalities of Breitenburg and Kronsmoor is a decommissioned area for chalk extraction owned by Holcim AG. The pit is approximately one kilometer long and about 700 meters wide.
The pit was operated until 1916 by the company "Portland Cement Factory Saturn," founded in 1898 in Brunsbüttel, which had incurred losses since its inception. The company was later acquired by Kali Chemie AG from Hanover. The factory was the first chemical plant in Brunsbüttel, which was demolished in 1981. The area was chosen for extraction because the nearby Stör could be used for transport.
