The Anderten lock, formerly known as Hindenburg lock, in Hannover-Anderten overcomes a height difference of 14.70 m between the West holding and the summit holding of the Mittelland Canal. At the time of its inauguration in 1928, it was the largest inland lock in Europe.
After shipping operations began in 1916 on the Mittelland Canal from the "Wet Triangle" to the Misburger Hafen, construction of the largest inland lock in Europe began in 1919 east of Hannover in the then still independent village of Anderten. After the dredging work, construction of the actual lock began in 1924, which was inaugurated on June 20, 1928, by Reich President von Hindenburg. At the same time, shipping traffic in the further course of the Mittelland Canal to Peine and on the Hildesheim branch canal was allowed to commence. The lock was named Hindenburg lock in honor of the Reich President.
