The King's Chair of Rhens is a stone, two-storey octagonal building serving as an enlarged representation of a throne, located in the place of the walnut garden in Rhens on the Rhine, south of Koblenz, where negotiations of the electors for the election of the Roman-German kings were held during the Middle Ages, as well as some royal elections. Through these negotiations, the electors strengthened their position of power, which they secured in 1338 in the Electoral Association of Rhense through an alliance, and which found its permanent expression in imperial law in the Golden Bull of 1356. The structure that can be visited today, thus pointing to the origins of the historical foundations of today’s federalism in Germany, is, however, a relocated new building from the year 1842, whose original was destroyed in 1795 during the turmoil of the First Coalition War and the French occupation of the left bank of the Rhine.
