The main church of St. Michaelis in Hamburg has five organs: the Marcussen organ in the concert gallery, the large Steinmeyer organ in the west gallery, above it in the attic a distant work, in the crypt the romantic Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy organ, and since Advent 2010 the Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach organ in the south gallery. Additionally, there is a central console in the concert gallery.
The Great Organ was built from 1960 to 1962 by the organ building company G. F. Steinmeyer & Co. as Opus 2000 and replaced the former Walcker organ. The design of the prospectus largely goes back to this predecessor. It is the main organ of the Hamburg main church St. Michaelis and a significant testimony to organ building of the 1960s. In 2009/2010, the Steinmeyer organ was restored to its original condition by the companies Johannes Klais Orgelbau and Freiburger Orgelbau Hartwig and Tilmann Späth with only minor changes. Due to its special timbre, it is classified as an important neo-baroque sound monument.
