The history of the castle dates back to the residence of the von Kotzau family. The castle was destroyed several times, including during the Hussite Wars. In the 18th century, the complex had largely fallen into disrepair and was rebuilt in the Baroque style. Remnants of a tower and the chapel are still known. After the village fire of 1852, the castle complex was constructed in its present form.
For the descendants of the "non-aristocratic" union of Margrave Georg Albrecht the Younger, son of Georg Albrecht the Elder from the Franconian Hohenzollern family, and the commoner Regina Magdalena Lutz, daughter of the baker from Lichtenberg, the name of the extinct knightly family of Kotzau was reassigned and, in the second generation, endowed with the title of Baron and a modified family crest. The family took residence in Schloss Oberkotzau and lived there until 1962. It died out in the male line in 1976.
